Building confidence once at a time
SAGE Counseling Centre is an organization focused on supporting the well-being of the seniors, with a special focus on their psychological and social health. They approached us to run an 8-week woodworking programme, Mind in the Making, designed for senior beneficiaries and members of the public who simply want to volunteer and learn something new while practising mindfulness throughout the sessions from start to finish.
Creating for the community
Ugly Wood Company carefully designed the session at a comfortable pace, giving seniors time to familiarise themselves with the tools and techniques. For the final project, the participants came together to build benches for a neighborhood kindergarten, which they later painted alongside their students and volunteers from various corporations. The project proves that it’s never too early or never too late to learn something new while giving back to the community.
From Learning to Making a Difference
The seniors’ excitement showed us that the workshop was a success. From introducing woodworking to complete beginners to watching them enjoy the process and create meaningful crafts for a cause, the experience showed us how woodworking can be a mindful activity, encouraging seniors to slow down, bring people together, and create a sense of purpose.
